Kuressaare Gymnasium is one of the biggest secondary schools in Estonia, situated on Saaremaa.
Saaremaa (2672 square km) is the fourth largest island in the Baltic Sea. Kuressaare is the capital of Saaremaa has territory of about 15 sq.km and a population of about 16,000.
Kuressaare is a highly valued tourist destination among both domestic and foreign visitors due to its location, security and well kept scenes. Thousands of people visit the place every year.
Kuressaare Gymnasium was established at 1978. This schoolyear we have 930 students (503 girls, 427boys) from 7 to 18 years old.

Kuressaare Gymnasium is an open educational establishment for all applicants. Our aim is to offer as many teachers and students as possible the chance to move to the highest level of self-accomplishment in their understandings and aspirations.

Our mission: to form an ethical person who can cope in life, and who would be a life-long learner.
Our assignment: carrying out national curriculum and getting to the competencies of it, so that our students would say in the future and today:
KG-and you want to go to school!

Schools profile

To the curriculum of primary classes are added economy studies, music, manual activities, rhythmic and folk-dance lessons in the limits of allowed load.
In gymnasium now students can make a choice between 7 different study-branches:

+ Info technology
+ Sciences
+ Natural sciences
+ Humanities
+ Social sciences
+ National defense
A study-branch is a complete complex of compulsory and optional courses and other study tasks ( practical training research project) which aim is students´ absorbed preparation for continuing studies in suitable subject-realm and for corresponding state examinations.

KG study system enables to correct the programs of study-branches flexibly and also open new ones according to the students´ and parents´ wishes or the need of the society.

Study regulation

Lessons on the I school level generally take place in the form of subject teaching. Also general teaching or the combination of these two named is enabled the school year is divided into four quarters.

On the I and II school level and in gymnasium period study is used combined with class-study.

The school year is divided into five periods and subject plans have mostly been divided into 35-lesson courses.
Lessons of sport, music, and handicraft take place with regular load per week all through the school year.
Arising from the needs of school and aims of subject commissions it is also possible to learn other courses of single subjects through the school year.

In addition to normal study forms support study in mathematics and native language is given in forms 1-8.
In gymnasium learning compulsory courses takes place by classes, for optional all the graduates of one year are divided into groups. Learning A, B and C languages takes place in groups of level, depending on the students` choices of A and B language.

In KG A, B and C foreign languages are English, German and Russian.

Opening language groups depends on the school’s possibilities, the minimum number of students in a group must be at least 10.

Documentation of study regulation

All students of the II and III school level and the gymnasium students get their individual timetable.
A subject is put together by the subject teacher electronically, it is a thematic plan of the course, which is meant to introduce the course. Drawing up a subject card is compulsory for the subject teacher and it must be available in the data base of subject cards by the start of the course.

In the Studentbook we find personal data of a student, his/ her moving from a class/school to another and marks (grades) of the year( is located in the school office )
Classregister (forms I-IX) contains marks of students in a certain class, is filled corresponding to the state instruction (is located in the teachers room).

Teachers` register (forms X-XII) where a teacher writes down all marks given during the course, course marks absences and delays and the class teacher puts down summary marks of students in her/his class.(is kept by a teacher, at the end of every week is taken to the teachers room).

Study book , where teachers write down the marks of the course, credit tests, year and examination marks.

Students diary ( grades I-IX) which a student presents to his/her parents once in a half-term or in a period and brings it back to the class teacher signed by a parent.

Progress Report , that includes marks of a year and it is given out only to these students who move to another school.

Students` individual assessmentcard (grades X-XII) where the class teacher marks down all the results of courses and examinations and also the student’s personal data.
It is the possession of the school’s assistant director and is kept in the school’s archive.

Tests take place according to the test table, which is located in the teachers` room. One day each class can have only one test. Students must be informed of a test at least 1 week before the test.

The educating centre Osilia is also belonging to our school. We are able to organise training that meets all modern requirements, as the centre has been quite well supplied with necessary equipment. The educating centre, which was created with the help of the Lions movement, has found its role and it will give its best in developing the educational scene on the island of Saaremaa.
